At a moment of general stirring of ideas of emancipation, women were especially open to manifestations of freedom within the arts. In turn, patrons of modern art in the early 20th century provided cultural legitimacy to the avant-garde and to modern artists working in Europe and America, and women are counted among the most visible and active in institutionalizing modern art.
