As 2015 comes to a close, we wanted to share some quick stats on the year that’s gone by.

Desiderata or Desired Things
Despite what you might have read about the ‘Swinging 60’s’ - ‘free love’, ‘Camberwell carrots’, ‘Sergeant Pepper’ and so on - young people at the time weren’t just interested in sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. For all their long hair, bra burning and “Peace and Love” other things were also grabbing their attention like eastern mysticism, equal rights, the environment and macrobiotic diets and there were plenty of books and poetry around to support their curiosity.

Consultation: Council Tax Reduction Proposal
Current Council Tax Reduction Scheme is set to cost our residents £3.7m a year. Richmond Council is making proposals that would require everyone of a working age (other than vulnerable claimants) to contribute at least 5% towards their Council Tax.

Consultation: Adult Care Services
Richmond Council is asking older and vulnerable residents and their carers for their views on proposals to change the criteria for receiving financial help from the Council towards the cost of social care services.

The Holly and the Ivy
Our modern Christmas celebrations sit firmly on the shoulders of earlier pagan midwinter festivals like Yule and Saturnalia and many of their beliefs and practises remain with us to this day. In fact so popular were many of these pre-Christian customs that in the late 6th century Pope Gregory 1 wrote to Augustine of Canterbury advising him to permit and even encourage their continuing use if they were “pleasing to the Almighty”…

Local charity appeals for the 'Sweetest Gift'
Jeevika Trust, a small, Hampton Wick-based International Development charity, is appealing to the local community for help with an innovative project this Christmas. The organisation, in partnership with five carefully-selected Indian NGO partners, works to improve rural livelihoods in some of the most deprived regions of rural India through creating income generation opportunities for women and through improving access to clean water, better sanitation, better nutrition and improved healthcare for villagers.
